With The Light at the End of the Tunnel, poet Shawn L. Harper presents an honest and frank account of crippling depression, its frightening effects, and the difficult journey towards happiness and freedom. With deft skill and a keen sense of economy, the author addresses issues that are difficult for most to put into words, effortlessly capturing their essences clearly -- from utter helplessness and despair to awe and appreciation for life and nature.
Presented as a chronological journey, the book's initial poems are permeated with a relentless sense of worthlessness and inner torture. There is a bleakness and lack of hope that is absolute and seemingly inescapable. As the journey progresses, however, the focus and anger shift outward and glimmers of hope begin to appear, until the poem "The Awakening" presents a sudden sense of transformation. The remainder of the collection revels in nature, art and music, love, and joyful childhood memories -- a rediscovery of self and family, an immersion in familiar surroundings, and a return home after a long and mysterious disappearance. Taken as a whole, The Light at the End of the Tunnel is a deeply personal and enlightening glimpse into -- and out of -- a realm that most would rather simply avoid. The topics are all too real, though, and with this fine collection of poetry, Shawn L. Harper has shown the courage to confront the demons head-on and emerge victorious. --Pink Bob |
